WAVYCAKE

Jun-ho Lee (25) is a music producer from Pangyo, Bundang. Though he finds it hard to define his music style, as he's still learning and experimenting, his album "A boy with love" incorporates many genres such as R&B, soul, and lofi hip-hop. We interviewed him to find out about his musical sound and influences, and more.

Disclaimer: These are very basic questions we ask every artist to get to know more about them in order to write our "Who You" segment on Instagram. All the artists often get similar questions. We would normally not release this as it's not a full-on interview but we thought it might be good to do so.

@wavy_cake

When did you start music?

I started making music in 2016 when I was 21. I thought it would be nice to become an adult, enter college, and have a hobby. I came into contact with music and I was interested in it. I think I officially began when I was 22.

What was your childhood dream?

I really enjoyed online lectures and I was very interested in science, so I dreamed of becoming an online lecturer until I was in high school.

What do you want to say or convey through music? What inspires your music?

I think music is a really good art for conveying emotions. I mainly focus on the emotions I'm feeling, and I try to deliver them by creating songs or full albums. I feel inspired by many things including people, conversations, products, and emotions.

How would you describe yourself as a producer? What's your personality like and what are your interests at the moment?

I would say that I'm a producer who expresses my feelings through my music, I'm pretty emotional and shy, but I try to hide that side of me. These days... I don't think that there's anything else besides music that interests me at the moment. I look for new things to try out, but nothing has caught my interest yet.

Do you participate in the writing process or allow artists to write on their own? If the artists have to write the lyrics for a project, do you give directions?

When I work on a song, I usually decide on the topic then talk to the artist and we coordinate. I tend to share the direction and feeling with them so we can integrate it, as well as keywords that could inspire certain stories and lyrics.

One Fine Day feat. Chaanill - Wavycake

Which artists inspire you and who would you like to collaborate with? What songs do you listen to a lot at the moment?

My biggest inspiration is Frank Ocean and, these days, I get a lot of inspiration from Emotional Oranges, so I think I listen to the songs by these two artists most. I'd like to collaborate with Jclef and Colde.

What song are you most proud of? Do you think on an international scale when making songs?

I don't think I've released the track that I am most proud of yet, but my favourite tracks so far are 'Space' and 'Beautiful'. I don't think I've ever thought about my songs on an international scale yet.

Beautiful feat. Ayul, Wally - Wavycake

Can you tell us more about your first album "A boy in love"? Why did you choose this title?

The album is about love and is centred on a male protagonist. The title track is based on the protagonist's most extreme emotions when he's in love.

When someone who doesn't speak Korean hears "A boy in love", it sounds nostalgic and depressing. Is that what you wanted to say?

For people who don't really understand the lyrics, that is the mood I was going for. I wanted to convey both the ups and downs of the protagonist's emotions.

Can you tell us more about the tracks "Deep End" and "후회해"?

"Deep End" is a track about the protagonist not being able to fulfil his love for his lover. It's a track about reminiscence.

"후회해" is a track about how you think you are the cause of the situation and that you regret your past actions.

Deep End feat. JUNNY, VEAN - Wavycake

Will your next project sound very different from "A boy in love"?

My next project is not extremely different, but there are aspects that are disparate. My next album is not just made up of tracks based on my emotions and stories. I've also discussed with the artists to integrate their emotions.

What can we look forward to in the future? What should we expect from Wavycake's music?

My first album is from the depth of my heart that I hope the listeners can feel. More than musicality, I wanted to evoke an emotional response. I think I've focused a lot on the quality of the songs that I've released so far, so I hope to bring something new to the listeners this time. Please look forward to the release.

Is there anything else you would like to say about yourself?

Hello, this is the producer Wavycake.

Since I was discharged from the military this year, I've been working very hard on my music and I'm preparing to release a single in September, an EP in November, and a collaboration album with a vocalist friend in December.

After completing my military service, I've been working very diligently. There are a lot of songs to be released so please look forward to it.

I think I was able to work harder thanks to the fans who support me. I will try my best to repay you with good music.

Thank you.
